Hollywood Section Kicks off 2005-2006 Season
The section was honored to be able to have the American Society of
Cinematographers (ASC) Technology Committee as the featured speakers. The American Society of Cinematographers
traces its roots to the early 1900s.
There were many early meetings between ASC and members of the Society of
Motion Picture Engineers, which was founded in 1916. This meeting continued the synergy between
the two organizations.
After the lavish social hour hosted by Dalsa Digital Cinema, Eastman Kodak, and Panavision Inc.,
and a short
Curtis then introduced the chairs of the various
sub-committees. These sub-committees
cover all aspects of the imaging chain.
Speakers included, Steering (Chair) Daryn Okada, ASC; Workflow
(Co-Chairs) Al Barton, Gary Morse; Camera, (Chair) Dave Stump, ASC (Vice Chair)
Richard Edlund; ASC, Camera Assessment Series,
Metadata (Chair) Dave Stump; ASC, Digital Intermediate (Chair) Lou Levinson
(Vice Chair) Josh Pines; Digital Display (Chair) Glenn Kennel; Advanced Imaging
(Chair) Gary Demos; Archiving-Preservation (Chair) Grover Crisp.
Each sub-committee gave a brief summary of their mission and the current
projects they are working on. Some of
the accomplishments included the collaboration with the DCI organization to
create the stEM footage that has become a standard
for testing of cinema digital projection; the committee has addressed workflow
issues in a digital world; working with camera manufacturers to use metadata as
a means to preserve the cinematographer’s artistic intent throughout the
workflow for years to come; examining pre-visualization systems and
standardization of technology within may areas of the capture, delivery, and
preservation chain.
The two-hour meeting concluded with a question and answer period.
